Les Saintes Day Trip by Boat from Sainte-Rose

From €150 · 7:00 am → 5:30–6:30 pm · small group (12 max) · Port of Sainte-Rose · free cancellation up to 24 h

Les Saintes is the little archipelago off the southern tip of Guadeloupe that everyone tells you not to miss. Most people get there by car and ferry. We do it differently: we pick you up at the port of Sainte-Rose at 7 in the morning and sail you there ourselves, then bring you home after the sun has gone down.

It’s a long day, but there’s no driving, no ferry queue and no timetable to keep an eye on. You just turn up with your swimsuit.

The day, hour by hour

7:00 am. We leave Sainte-Rose (please be at our hut on the port 20 minutes early) and head south along the leeward coast of Basse-Terre, where the trade winds are gentler.

Morning. First stop, Pain de Sucre beach on Terre-de-Haut. Breakfast is on us: espresso, tea, croissants and pains au chocolat, eaten with your feet in the water. Then a swim.

Late morning. About two hours of free time in the village of Terre-de-Haut, with its colourful houses and little shops. Fort Napoléon is up on the hill, but the climb is steep, so it’s really for keen walkers.

Lunch. If you’ve booked the option (€30), Marine serves her local specialities in a beach shelter on Îlet à Cabrit. Afterwards, a 10 to 15 minute stroll takes you up to Fort Joséphine. Hardly anyone goes there, and the view over Terre-de-Haut and the whole archipelago is our favourite.

Afternoon. A swim at Terre-de-Bas, in a cove where sea turtles live: you’re almost certain to see them, though at sea nothing is ever guaranteed. On the way back, a stop at the hot springs of Bouillante, where warm water comes out of the ground right at the edge of the sea.

Evening. A drink in Deshaies bay, then the sunset from the boat near Kahouanne and Tête à l’Anglais. We’re back in Sainte-Rose between 5:30 and 6:30 pm, depending on when the sun sets.

Some days we spot dolphins along the way, and early in the year, now and then, a humpback whale. Never guaranteed, always magic.

Questions people ask us

Isn’t it a very long day?

It is, about 11 hours. But it’s spread out between swims, breakfast, the village, lunch and the sunset, and most people tell us it went by far too fast.

Is lunch included?

Breakfast is. Lunch is an option at €30, served on Îlet à Cabrit by Marine.

Can my kids come?

Yes, from age 6. They pay the adult price.

Do I need my own snorkel gear?

No, we’ve got fins, masks and snorkels on board.

Will we see turtles?

Almost certainly, at Terre-de-Bas: we stop in a cove where they live. But it’s their home, not a show. We watch from a distance, never touch or feed them, and at sea nothing is ever guaranteed.

Only got half a day? Try our mangrove and lagoon tour in the Grand Cul-de-Sac Marin.
